Never was this more true than in Herschel Walker’s time at the University of Georgia. Walker was literally a machine among college men, powering through and around would-be tacklers like few before him. Starting in his first game as a freshman Herschel immediately made his impact felt, absorbing All-American Tennessee Safety Bill Bates’ hit and trucking him to the ground before rumbling towards the pay dirt. Walker would go on run for 1,616 yards and 15 touchdowns his freshman year, even while sitting a full 11 quarters due to minor injuries and Coach Vince Dooley’s mercy. Georgia won the only football national championship in school history in 1980, riding the back of their workhorse RB, steamrolling Notre Dame defenders in the Sugar Bowl to the tune of 150 yards rushing, meanwhile the rest of the offense was held to -23. Were it 2010, Walker would have undoubtedly walked away with the Heisman trophy his freshman year, but 30 years ago it was less acceptable for a rook to win such an award. Two years later however, Herschel would get his Heisman, closing out a storied 3-year college career.Walker’s professional career is underappreciated in almost all sports circles, signing with the USFL instead of the NFL, it’s premiere player in a league that would include Reggie White, Jim Kelly, Chris Carter, Randall Cunningham and Steve Young among fellow future Pro Bowlers. In 1995, Walker surpassed Walter Payton’s all-time mark of 21,803 all purpose yards, including his 7,115 USFL yards (2,411 in the 1985 season alone), though little mention was ever made of the feat. No, Walker’s USFL time is irrelevant in NFL circles despite the mindboggling statistics Walker posted in the highly competitive league. After the USFL folded, Walker would make the NFL Pro Bowl, but has been excluded from the Hall of Fame largely due to his USFL stigma. Regardless, Walker is perhaps the greatest running back to ever walk the planet, now you can have this autographed replica helmet with Hall of Fame value, at just a Pro Bowl price.
